The Veil
In Aurora Hallow, there is no greater honor, or reckoning, than attempting to cross The Veil.
The Veil is an energetic boundary encompassing the Hallow to hide and protect it from the human world. Created by Aurora, The Veil contains a realm, a living force, and a transformation waiting to happen. And crossing it is one of the most sacred and challenging acts one can experience in their lifetime.
Creation of The Veil
Once upon a time, humans came and went from Aurora Hallow freely. The residents of the Hallow and the humans had much in common and there was peace between them. But, one day Aurora sensed something was changing in the humans. They were becoming numb and disconnected. Aurora didn't know it then, but this was the beginning of an emotional sickness called The Shadow which has grown more powerful with every shut-down heart it's consumed.
Aurora watched the danger brewing and made a decision to remove the humans and seal the Hallow off indefinitely. She poured her grief, her compassion, and ancient knowing into her creation, and from that sacrifice, The Veil was born.
The Veil is a living boundary. It doesn't block danger with force… It tests truth.
Only beings who feel deeply, honestly, and without hiding any part of themselves may pass. This is to ensure that only those who haven't been infected by The Shadow may pass.
The Veil is alive. It listens. It remembers. And it only opens for those who are worthy.
Why Fawns Cross
When a Fawn is matched with a human, their destinies become entwined. To stand beside their human in the human's world, the fawn must cross The Veil and survive. A large part of a Fawn's strength inside The Veil comes from Glimmers, the sparks of love born from connection with their human. The deeper the bond, the stronger the Fawn.
Inside The Veil
The moment you step into The Veil, time dissolves. There is no "before" or "after." There is only now, and it stretches endlessly.
A Fawn may wander through years of memories, regrets, and unhealed wounds yet only minutes pass outside.
The Fawn is faced with everything they've avoided feeling: every fear, every wound, every unspoken word.
The Veil is a mirror, one that reflects everything you've been hiding. It surfaces buried fears, abandoned feelings, and past experiences you never fully processed. What you feel inside The Veil is you, stripped down to the emotional truth of who you are. This process is terrifying for many.
If you've spent your life avoiding pain, denying need, or pretending you're fine when you're not, The Veil will show you every crack. Every time you attempt to disassociate or distract, it will start over and whisper, "Now. Let's try again."
Emotional Pain in The Veil
Every emotion you avoided in the outside world becomes amplified inside The Veil.
Every self-doubt, every buried shame, every loss you pretended didn't matter, you must face it here.
There is no numbing in The Veil. There is no escape hatch. There is only you, and the parts of yourself that have been waiting to be felt.
Some Fawns describe the experience as being "crushed by their own unlived grief." Others say it felt like holding all their heartbreak in their hands, and realizing they had to let it burn before they could walk forward.
This is the trial.
The Veil does not punish. But to make it through, a Fawn needs two things: emotional honesty and resilience. They must stay with what hurts without it destroying their light.
Until they do, they will be caught in emotional loops, repeating scenes from their life, conversations that still wound, or memories that still carry regret.
Fawns who have returned from The Veil often report experiencing waves of intense self-reflection, followed by something else: release.
When you let yourself feel completely, The Veil begins to open.
Surviving The Veil
There are two keys to surviving The Veil:
-
Emotional honesty
-
Psychological resilience
The first is obvious: you cannot fake your way through. If you're not ready to face yourself, The Veil will know.
But the second is resilience and it's just as important.
To make it through The Veil, you must be able to stay present with pain without shutting down. You must endure waves of doubt without abandoning yourself. You must learn how to feel, fully, without letting it destroy you.
This is why Fawns are trained in emotional regulation from a young age. It's why they are taught to meditate, reflect, and name their feelings. Because if they are ever called to cross, they will need every ounce of strength to stay open.
How Glimmers Make Fawns Stronger
But even the bravest Fawn cannot make it through The Veil alone. What strengthens them inside that realm are the small moments they share with their human. Moments that seem quiet in your world, but in ours become Glimmers. A Glimmer forms every time a human and their Fawn share something real: a truth spoken without armor, a feeling allowed instead of swallowed, a soft pause where neither heart hides.
Human scholars might call these micro-moments of connection: fleeting exchanges that, according to studies of attachment and emotion regulation, reshape the nervous system and build trust over time. Glimmers between humans are incredibly powerful and are our biggest defence against The Shadow. Each Glimmer is a stitch in the thread that binds two souls, strengthening from within.
Inside The Veil, where every buried fear rises and every forgotten grief returns, Glimmers become a Fawn's guiding light. They fuel the two qualities The Veil demands above all else: emotional honesty and resilience by giving the Fawn the strength they need to face themselves. The more Glimmers shared between a human and their Fawn, the more capable the Fawn becomes of facing what The Veil reveals without shutting down or turning away. In this way, a deep bond is not merely comforting, it is the force that determines whether a Fawn can withstand the reckoning and find their way through the dark.
The Enlightenment
If you survive The Veil, you will emerge transformed.
This is not symbolic. It is literal.
You will know who you are.
You will know why you're here.
You will carry a resonance that wasn't there before, like a bell that finally rings at the right frequency.
This is called Veil Enlightenment.
It is not something you can teach or borrow. It can only be earned through the act of feeling everything you've been avoiding and letting it change you.
Once enlightened, a Fawn carries an intuitive understanding of why they were chosen for their human. They step into their purpose with clarity, an inner knowing that they can walk toward The Shadow without being consumed by it. These Fawns become the Shadow Fighters, bridging the realms as protectors of human hearts and guardians of the Hallow's surviving light.
But the transformation comes with gravity. The Veil's blessing is also a responsibility. Enlightened Fawns understand that their strength was built alongside their human's… the bond that saved them must now be used to save others.
The Risk
The Veil is not evil. But it is dangerous.
If you are not ready, it will hold you. You will not come back the same. And you may not come back at all.
There are Fawns who entered The Veil and wandered its emotional terrain for what felt like centuries before returning to Aurora Hallow, unable to cross into the human world… and some never return. This is why no Fawn is allowed to attempt the crossing without training and being chosen for a match.
Final Truths
The Veil is one of Aurora's greatest creations. It protects the forest and it elevates those who pass through it.
It ensures that only those who have faced their own shadow may walk freely between worlds. Those who survive The Veil have the power in them to fight off The Shadow.
